we're glad to welcome dan abrams, ron claiborne and rachel smith. we have a big news cycle going on. secretary of state hillary clinton in the hospital. we'll get to that in just a moment. a diagnosis of a blood clot. we have some weather stories. including the latest on this horrific tour bus crash on an icy highway in oregon. it was packed full of tourists. skidded off the road, nine dead, many more injured. and the live shot from new york presbyterian hospital where secretary of state hillary clinton is being cared for right now. martha raddatz has the latest. >> reporter: the secretary has not been seen in public since early december after an illness and then a fall. this is the first time she's landed in the hospital. >> probably a good idea to -- >> >> reporter: on sunday,

secretary clinton was admitted to new york hospital for a treatment of a blood clot. according to the state department in the course of a followup exam, the doctors discovered a blood clot had formed, stemming from the concussion several weeks ago. she was last seen december 7th after an overseas trip. on december 9th, she canceled a trip with her spokesman saying, she was under the weather. later it was revealed she had fainted from dehydration due to a severe stomach virus and suffered a concussion. abc news learned that in addition to being on an i.v. drip, she was treated by to teams of doctors, underwent a series of tests, and was experiencing headaches and dizziness. since that time, the state department said she was working from home. she missed her scheduled

testimony on the hill regarding the taken to consulate in benghazi, an absence that drew criticism from some republicans. this is not the first time clinton has had a blood clot. she had one in her leg in 1998, following a vigorous travel schedule. she discussed her health and age with abc's barbara walters. >> is your age a concern to you? >> it really isn't. i'm thankfully healthy and have incredible stam than and energy. >> reporter: she does, indeed, normally have incredible energy and stamina. this is a very big setback. so much we don't know. >> including where in her body this blot is. that could have a big significance in how it's treated and the seriousness of it. >> reporter: that's true. i asked if the clot is in her

head or her leg, they will not say. they have said she has other issues from the concussion but won't swhat they are. >> it's puzzling, the lack of information, given the republican charges of benghazi flu or a diplomatic illness when they were failing to believe she was as sick as she was. >> reporter: the clintons are notoriously private. they just don't say much, especially about issues like this. >> have you dealt with something like this, where there's so little information forthcoming? >> reporter: i can't say i have. over the last few weeks, they've come back at us saying you're making it sound too serious. clearly, there are serious things going on. it raises more questions when you know so very little. >> all right, thank you so much. we're joined by chief health and medical editor dr. richard besser. we know she's been treated with

anti-coagulant drugs. does that tell you that the clot is not in her lungs or brain? >> everyone agrees that the most likely scenario is she has another clot in her leg. that type of clot is called a deep vein thrombosis. she probably had a period of pro longed time in bed with the headaches and dizziness. that is a risk factor. >> we know that this is the kind of clot that people who travel on airplanes for long distances get, people who are immobile get. it can be deadly. it killed david bloom. >> you worry about the clot breaking off, traveling sba your heart and into your lungs. your blood pressure can drop suddenly. you put someone on an anti-coing

a lant, that can keep it from happening. >> how serious is a blood clot? >> in her leg, probably not serious. a few months on anti-coagulants. a blood clot in her head is a different situation. if you fall and hit your head and you have bleeding in your head, you wouldn't put someone on an anti-coagulant. you have a central vein in your head that can cause clots with a severe head injury. thinks are not adds up. i expect we'll learn more today to shed light on that. >> this neb lus other health issues we keep hearing about. what could that be? >> we haven't seen her since december 7th. you can have trouble concentrating after a concussion, weakness in your body. we're not getting a lot of information.

>> all right, dr. richard besser, thank you. >> wishing her the best. now to the latest on the fiscal cliff. just a matter of hours until we officially go over the edge. law maikers scrambling this morning to put together an 11th hour compromise or we'll be ringing in higher taxes with the new year. jonathan karl is in washington. >> reporter: good morning, dan. the taxes are set to go up at the stroke of midnight. talks went late into the night and will continue this morning. as washington teerts on the edge of the fiscal cliff, there is still no deal. as talks continued overnight, a voice of frustration erupted on the senate floor. >> something has gone terribly wrong when the big es threat to our american economy is our american congress. >> reporter: leaders negotiated all weekend long. the talks hit a brick wall. harry reid saying, he was unable

to even counter the latest republican offer. >> at this stage, we're not able to make a counteroffer. it appears there are things that stop us from moving forward. >> reporter: that prompted mitch mcconnell to call for a lifeline. >> i placed a call to the vice president to see if he could help jump start the negotiations on his side. i want everyone to know i'm willing to get this done. but i need a dance partner. >> reporter: with that, vice president biden is now impemers as a key player, playing a direct role in the effort to strike a last-minute deal. the key sticking points remain the same. the white house wants taxes to go up on those making over $250,000 a year. republicans want a higher information threshold. they want to keep the estate tax from going up. there's no agreement on what to do about the automatic spending cuts set to go into effect on

january 2nd. both sides have said the cost of failure is extremely high. >> if we're not able to reach an agreement, it will be dire. probably at least another million jobs lost, an unemployment rate over 9% and putting us back into recession. >> reporter: vice president biden and republican leader mcconnell had several conversations deep into the night. the conversations were good, said a spokes person for mcconnell. time is almost out. >> the cutoff is tomorrow. we hear in your piece about the dire consequences. most americans might not feel the effects immediately, right? >> reporter: not right away, but was thing will be felt in their very first paycheck of 2013, the payroll tax that was cut by 2%. that goes back up. the income tax cuts, the treasury has not changed the withholding tables yet in

anticipation of deal. if there is no deal, they'll have to do that. you'll see a big drop in one of your early pay checks. >> that's not the way anyone wants to ring in the new year. we turn to abc's ron claiborne with the other news. >> dan, imagine this. we're going begin with good news. elizabeth, hello. >> yea! >> it appears that milk and dairy prices will not double. there's now support from both parties to extend thebill. without that legislation, milk could hit $7 gallon with similar increases for cheese, yogurt, and more. the deadly tour bus crash on an icy interstate in eastern oregon. it happened yesterday morning. steep, snowy terrain made it tough for rescuers to reach the survivors. horror on the highway in oregon. the driver of this bus lost control sending the vehicle off the road, through a guardrail,

and plummeted down a 100-foot embankment. nine passengers were killed. at least 26 others injured. >> there was snow on the ground which made footing treacherous. we used a haul system to get the patients from the crash site. back up to the highway. >> reporter: police cited the icy conditions on the interstate as a contributing factor. authorities say the investigation is ongoing. the area is covered in about a foot of snow and surrounded by dense pine trees. the bus driver survived, but so far, the severity of his injuries keeps him from telling his story. the group was on a final day of a nine-day tour and returning to vancouver after a stop in las vegas. the area where the bus crashed is dead man pass. it's claimed quite a few other lives over the years. check out this scene.
